Unilumin Transforms Virtual Production with 106-foot Video Wall

As the film, television, and commercial production industries increasingly adopt virtual production, studios are investing in large-scale LED volumes that enable real-time environments and in-camera visual effects. Productions that once required extensive green screen work, post-production compositing, or costly on-location shoots can now be filmed within immersive LED environments.

Goal Line Studios in Northern California recognized this shift and sought to modernize its production capabilities to compete with leading virtual production stages across the country. The studio aimed to transform its facility into a high-end virtual production environment capable of supporting complex cinematic workflows for a wide range of productions.

Objective

Goal Line Studios set out to create a cutting-edge virtual production facility that could:

  • Support feature film, television, and commercial production
  • Deliver in-camera visual effects using XR (Extended Reality) technology
  • Provide real-time virtual environments for live productions and corporate events
  • Position the studio as one of the premier virtual production stages in the United States

To achieve this, the studio needed an advanced LED solution capable of delivering exceptional image quality, reliability, and integration with industry-standard virtual production tools.

Solution

In March 2023, Goal Line Studios completed a full renovation of its 7,000-square-foot facility, installing one of the largest and most advanced volumetric LED video walls in the nation. The centerpiece of the upgrade is a 106-foot-wide by 20-foot-tall XR LED volume, powered by high-performance LED panels from Unilumin. The display delivers the high resolution, brightness, and refresh rates required for professional virtual production. Key elements of the installation include:

LED Video Wall Technology

  • High-performance Unilumin LED panels
  • Pixel pitch ranging from 1.3 mm to 2.9 mm
  • High refresh rates and HDR10 support for camera-friendly visuals
  • Designed specifically for XR and virtual production environments

Virtual Production Infrastructure

  • Disguise media server, supporting both Unreal Engine and Unity
  • Stype RedSpy camera tracking system with dual-camera tracking capability
  • Real-time rendering and synchronization for in-camera visual effects

Flexible Production Space

  • A 7,000-square-foot stage capable of hosting complex productions
  • Seating capacity for up to 250 people for live events
  • Designed for film, TV, livestreamed music videos, commercial shoots, and corporate events

The facility also benefited from collaboration with a range of industry specialists in engineering, sound design, volumetric media systems, and virtual production workflows.

Outcome

The renovation placed Goal Line Studios at the forefront of modern virtual production facilities in the United States. The massive LED volume enables filmmakers and content creators to capture immersive environments directly in-camera, reducing the need for extensive post-production while delivering highly realistic results. Today, the studio supports a wide variety of productions, including:

  • Feature film and television shoots
  • Live-streamed music video productions
  • Commercial and brand campaigns
  • Video game development environments
  • Corporate events and keynote presentations

By integrating advanced LED display technology from Unilumin with industry-leading virtual production tools, Goal Line Studios has created a powerful production environment that brings cinematic XR capabilities to Northern California and provides creators with a flexible, next-generation filming platform.
